Argentinean FA confirm Lionel Messi could miss Barcelona’s tie with Villarreal with overworked leg muscle
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has been ruled out of the Spanish champions’ game with Villarreal this coming weekend, according to Sport.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Argentinean FA (AFA) confirmed Messi is suffering from “muscular overload”, leaving his presence for the weekend clash against Villarreal in doubt.
The statement from president Julio Grondona reads:
“After speaking with the medic, Messi has a muscular overload to his leg and it is not known as to whether he will be able to play on Saturday.”
This is the reason why the Argentine international was left out of the friendly fixture against Costa Rica on Tuesday night by coach Sergio Batista, which ended in a 0-0 draw, and the leg muscle that hampered La Liga’s top scorer remains a concern for club boss Pep Guardiola this coming weekend, when they return to domestic action.
Batista decided not to risk using Messi when the forward felt discomfort in his leg and the same decision will likely be made by the Blaugrana’s medical team, with one eye on the Champions League tie with Shakhtar next midweek.
Barcelona travel to Villarreal on Sunday where the Catalan giants will try to retain their five point lead over Real Madrid, with their rivals facing Sporting.
Reports in Argentina claim Barcelona are not impressed Messi had to fly for 27 hours for the friendly he never played in.
